The launch event was accompanied by a debate on “Film scriptwriting: from theory to practice”. The dialogue partners were Diana Ludu, a student of UNATC’s Master’s in Screenwriting and one of the most sensitive and charming auctorial voices of her generation, Adrian Ionescu, an academic assistant and recent graduate of the Master’s in Screenwriting program, writer of several highly acclaimed performance projects, and Ana Agopian, screenwriter and director, director of UNATC’s Screenwriting-Filmology department, who also moderated the discussion.
An enemy of the mechanistic view of the script, Truby builds his “practical poetics for storytellers” (as he calls it) on the analogy of a living organism and organises the creative process from the inside of the story outwards. Truby’s translation project started from a shared need to improve the tools and ways of working I use with my students in my screenwriting classes. I have already successfully used Anatomy of the Story in the educational process of several generations of students, as well as in my own creative work.
John Truby is Hollywood’s foremost story consultant and founder of John Truby’s Writer’s Studio. He has been a consultant and script doctor for Walt Disney Studios, Sony Pictures, Fox Entertainment Group and HBO, among others, and has taught his 22 Steps to Great Screenwriting and his Genres course to over twenty thousand students worldwide. The Anatomy of the Story has been translated into all the world’s languages and appeared in Alexandru Maftei’s translation in Presa Universitară Clujeană.
Some of the stories analysed in the paper will become a film script
